Dr. Barbara Sharief is a proud sixth-generation Floridian, with deep roots that stretch back to the 1800s.
Her mother’s family has lived in Marianna, Florida, since that time, contributing to the region’s agricultural heritage, while her father’s side hails from Montgomery, Alabama. Growing up in a loving household in Miami as one of nine siblings, Dr. Sharief experienced a close-knit family life. However, at the age of 14, her world was dramatically altered when she lost her father to gun violence, an experience that transformed her journey from comfort to resilience.
Determined to succeed, Dr. Sharief worked three jobs to support herself through nursing school, motivated by her parents’ belief in the power of education as a pathway out of poverty. Today, she is a seasoned Autonomous Advance Practice Nurse with over 30 years of experience in healthcare. She holds six nursing degrees, including a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and owns a Family Practice in Davie, Florida. Additionally, she founded a successful home healthcare company, providing essential services and creating jobs for over 500 healthcare professionals.
Her public service journey has been equally impressive. Dr. Sharief made history as Broward County’s first African American female Mayor and as President of the Florida Association of Counties. With 14 years of experience as a city commissioner and three terms as a county commissioner, she has been a passionate advocate for affordable housing, economic growth, healthcare improvement, and educational opportunities for all.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, she co-authored the book No Glory Without a Story, sharing her entrepreneurial insights with others. A proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and the Ft. Lauderdale chapter of LINKS, Dr. Sharief is dedicated to uplifting her community.
Having recently been elected to serve as Florida State Senator for District 35, Dr. Barbara Sharief is eager to continue her work for a brighter future for all.
